Boston empties out in August for a reason. The ocean finally warms up, every coastal town throws its biggest festival of the year, and the drives are short enough to attempt with a toddler. Here's what's actually worth it, state by state.

Insider note from our July post still holds: the Cape gets emptier after mid-August as camps end — the last two weeks are the sleeper window.

Maine Lobster, blueberries & balloons

🦞
Jul 29–Aug 2 · Harbor Park, Rockland · Free admission
The big one — 79th year. Children's Parade, kids' Cod Fish Carry, a children's lobster-eating contest, the Diaper Derby, carnival rides, an expanded kids' tent, and the gloriously ridiculous International Lobster Crate Race across floating crates in the harbor. Details → · mainelobsterfestival.com ↗
🫐
Aug 5–9 · Union Fairgrounds, Union
A real agricultural fair wrapped around a blueberry festival — pie-eating contests, 4-H animals, midway rides. Maine's blueberry season peaks exactly now; many farms nearby offer picking. Details → · unionfair.org ↗
Sep 4–5 (Labor Day weekend) · Camden Harbor
Tall ships gather in one of Maine's prettiest harbors — watch the fleet arrive, then stay for the crate races and fireworks. The season's send-off — pairs perfectly with a Camden Hills State Park tower climb. Details →

If you're making a week of it: Portland's working waterfront (and the Children's Museum & Theatre of Maine), lighthouse-hopping around Cape Elizabeth, and Acadia's carriage roads — rentable bikes, no cars, endless popover stops. August water in southern Maine is as warm as it ever gets.

Rhode Island Fire, ferries & free zoos-days

🔥
Sat Aug 1 & Sat Aug 29 (full lightings) · Fri Aug 14 (basin lighting)
Nearly 100 bonfires lit on the rivers of downtown Providence at sunset, with music and street performers — free, and genuinely magical for kids. The Aug 14 basin lighting ends by 10 PM, the easier bedtime bet. Details → · waterfire.org ↗
🦒
Daily · Providence
1,000+ animals — elephants, giraffes, red pandas — plus a vintage carousel village next door. Pair with the Providence Children's Museum (ages 1–11) for a full city day. Details → · rwpzoo.org ↗
⛴️
All August · Ferry from Point Judith
The classic RI move: morning ferry, bike rental at the dock, Mohegan Bluffs stairs, beach, ice cream, evening boat home. Compact enough to do entirely without a car. Details → · blockislandferry.com ↗

Also worth knowing: Blithewold in Bristol runs its century-old family clambakes on the Great Lawn with lawn games and gardens at sunset, and Narragansett Town Beach is the state's easiest big-sand day with kids.

Route math from Boston: Cape ~1.5 hrs (leave before 8 AM on Saturdays), Providence ~1 hr, Rockland ME ~4 hrs (make it an overnight). One tank of gas covers Providence + a WaterFire night; Maine deserves a weekend.
