Puppet Showplace has been putting on puppet shows in Brookline Village since 1974 — over 300 performances a year in one small, cozy theater where every seat is close. Shows rotate every week or two: hand puppets, marionettes, shadow puppetry, toy theater, often with live music, from resident artists and touring companies from across the country. Most run 45–50 minutes, which is the right length for a three-year-old’s first show.

How it works: weekend shows are at 10:30 am and 1:00 pm; kids can color and look at puppets in the lobby before curtain. Each listing on the theater’s site gives a recommended age range — check it, because a 0–6 wordless show and a 5–9 story show feel very different. The $3 Card to Culture price applies at checkout with WIC, EBT, MassHealth or ConnectorCare.

Getting there: Green Line D to Brookline Village — the theater is across the street. Metered parking on Station Street and in the Brookline Village lots.
