Frequently asked questions

Which Boston museums run classes for kids?

Most of the majors do. The Museum of Science runs live shows and planetarium sessions plus dedicated vacation-week programming; the MFA has weekend drop-in art making and Play Dates for ages 0–4; the ICA runs a free Art Lab; the MIT Museum runs family workshops led by MIT students; and Boston Children's Museum has daily art and science studios for the under-nines.

Which museums are free for children?

The USS Constitution Museum is free with a suggested donation. Children under 18 are free at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and the ICA. Harvard Museum of Natural History is free to Massachusetts residents on Sunday mornings and Wednesday afternoons in season. Under-12s are free at the JFK Library. Always check the museum's own admission page — policies change.

What's the best museum for a toddler?

Boston Children's Museum and the Wenham Museum are built for the very young. Discovery Museum in Acton works for 0–10 and has Discovery Woods outdoors. The Museum of Science is better from about age 4 up, when the live shows land.

Do museums run school vacation week programmes?

Yes — December and February break are the two big weeks. The Museum of Science, MIT Museum, ICA, New England Aquarium, Discovery Museum, EcoTarium and Springfield Museums all add programming; Boston Children's Museum runs its Snowmazing! winter takeover straight through. Book ahead: vacation weeks are the busiest days of the museum year.

Which museums are worth the drive outside Boston?

Peabody Essex in Salem (the Yin Yu Tang house), Old Sturbridge Village (an 1830s working village), Springfield Museums (five museums including Dr. Seuss on one ticket), the EcoTarium in Worcester and Concord Museum for Revolutionary history.

Planning a vacation week?

Museum programmes are only half of it — see camps, holiday events and everything else on this winter.
