What families should know

Most families end up assembling this team themselves — a speech therapist here, an OT there, an advocate found through a friend before an IEP meeting. Scaffold’s premise is that those people should be in one place and talking to each other: mental health clinicians, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, educational consultants, learning specialists and family support professionals, working as one interdisciplinary group. Support can be individualised for your child, or you can use their care navigation to work out what your family actually needs first.

The newer piece is community programming — sessions open to any family, whether or not you are a client. The idea is to put the team’s expertise in front of the ordinary questions of parenting, and to help families meet each other. Programming runs at the Newton offices, in person and virtually, and has typically cost $30–75 an hour depending on the focus. Worth knowing that this is clinical and consulting work rather than an enrichment class — scheduling, fees and any insurance questions are handled directly with Scaffold.
