Frequently asked questions

What age can my child start tennis at Wightman?

Age 4. The Jumpstart clinic is built for ages 4–5 and introduces tennis through games, movement and age-appropriate equipment — shorter racquets and slower balls — rather than formal drills. From there children progress through Red Ball (5–8), Orange Ball (8–10) and Green Dot (10–12).

What are Red Ball, Orange Ball and Green Dot?

They are the progressive stages of junior tennis, each using a slower ball and a larger court than the last. Red Ball (5–8) starts on a short court, Orange Ball (8–10) moves up, and Green Dot (10–12) plays the full court with a slightly slower ball before graduating to standard yellow-ball tennis. The progression lets kids rally and play points from the very first lessons.

When is the fall 2026 junior clinic session?

September 8 through November 25, 2026, and registration is open. Clinics run at Wightman Tennis Center, 100 Brown St, Weston. Register through the junior clinics page or call (781) 237-3324.

Does Wightman have a program for competitive junior players?

Yes, two. Academy Prep (ages 10–12) is for developing tournament players working on technique, movement, tactics and competitive play in a small group. The Wightman Tennis Academy (ages 13–18) is for competitive juniors preparing for high school, USTA/UTR tournaments and college tennis, with advanced instruction and individualised coaching.
