What families should know

Camp JORI sits on 75 acres in Wakefield, Rhode Island, surrounded by Nature Conservancy protected land, with 600 feet of waterfront on Worden’s Pond, two swimming pools, a theater, a recreation hall and a 400-seat dining room. It is a co-ed, non-denominational pluralistic Jewish camp for grades K–10, ACA accredited, running overnight sessions from 2 to 10 weeks plus a day camp for grades K–4 — so one camp can cover a first-timer and a full-season sibling. The program spans sports, arts, theater, boating, fishing and swimming, with Jewish and Israeli culture woven through and a stated ethos of TACEO, “Taking Care of Each Other.” Not sure your child is ready to sleep away? The Jump Into JORI weekend gives them a taste of overnight camp first. Older campers can join the Leadership in Training program, which includes a trip to Israel. The camp traces its roots to the Jewish Orphanage of Rhode Island founded in 1909, has run as a camp since 1937, and moved to the Wakefield site in 2003. Financial aid is part of the mission — ask the office. About 1 hour 15 minutes from Boston.
